Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon (born May 15, 1923 in New York) had Russian and Jewish immigrant parents and is considered the worlds most famous and highest paid photographer for decades with a rare level of success in his 20’s.

Beginnings
After dropping out of high school at age 17 Richard Avedon worked at the Merchant Marines photographic section. Later he received an honary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London in 1989.
Career
Richard Avedon worked as a photographer at a department store before getting a position at Vogue and Harpers Bazaar and served as staff photographer for 45 years. At the New Yorker he became the first staff photographer. He was famous for using white backgrounds.

By Popular Magazine Richard Avedon was named one of the world’s 10 finest photographers.
Business Ventures
Richard Avedon has exhibits in the Kunst Museum Wolfsburg in Germany, the Whitney Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He published a number of books with his work including his auto biography.
Honors
Richard Avedon received the National Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2003.
